Server Shutdown and/or Restart

Overview

Occasionally the Tracker Server will have to be shut down re-booted/re-started. The reason for a re-boot/re-start may be a new program installed or it could simply be a suggested/recommended clean-up procedure. On a re-start the Server will cycle itself though as complete startup cycle without actually powering off. A shutdown will stop the Server and power it off. Some Servers may display a message like "Ok to Power Off" instead of actually turning the power off.

Always do a proper shutdown or restart procedure - Never just turn the power off.

That said, there will be the occasional rare instance when the Server is totally locked up and the only resolve will be to do a hard power off. When doing a hard power off wait 30 seconds or more before turning power on again.

Server shutdown or restart

At the main console select Start --> Shut Down on the desktop.

The Shut Down window will then display.

Make your selections as appropriate. The above shows a sample of a restart. Comments have to be entered and while they should appropriately reflect the reason for the shutdown or restart a single spacebar is sufficient to satisfy the shut down procedure. Once the selection is made and text entered in Comments click the OK button.

Be sure that your floppy drive is empty and that there is no bootable CD/DVD in any CD/DVD drive.

Other selections for "What do you want the computer to do?":

A normal restart should be uneventful. It is suggested that you observe the screen for possible error messages. Depending on how your Server is configured it may boot to a login screen, a ctrl-alt-delete prompt which will take you to a login screen or the Server may boot directly to a Desktop. There should be NO user input required after the restart was initiated. In fact, user intervention during the re-boot may actually impede or prevent a successful startup.
